Nedbank tests BLE mobile payments app

South Africa’s Nedbank is internally testing a proof-of-concept mobile payments app called Accolades that uses BLE beacons to connect customers to retailers as they enter the store. “In concept, the app would provide the product list or menu of the participating store, letting customers select the product and quantity and check it out in their mobile shopping cart without queues,” BusinessTech reports.

Marriott to deliver rewards to guests via BLE

Hotel chain Marriott is adding support for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons and special offers to its rewards program, enabling guests to access deals provided by Marriott hotels and other businesses during their stay. The new LocalPerks services will provide Marriott Rewards members with geo-targeted mobile offers during their visit to a particular hotel.

“Using beacon technology, participating hotels will send guests push notifications on their mobile devices as they move about the property,” Marriott says.

“Offers will be tailored to the property, ranging from food and beverage to spa to golf. Future plans for LocalPerks include Marriott Rewards offers available locally in the neighbourhoods surrounding participating hotels.”

The first property to introduce LocalPerks will be the San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina, which is due to go live on 24 July, followed by the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront and the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort, Golf Club & Spa.

Between stays, members will also be able to accessFlashPerks, a program that enables them to redeem points or pay cash for a range of exclusive deals and experiences. Weekly deals, including limited time offers on merchandise, hotel rooms and experiences will be available, Marriott says.

“With our global portfolio of brands and our ability to scale our mobile activations quickly, we are excited by these and other opportunities that marry new technologies and consumer benefits,” says Karin Timpone, Marriott’s global marketing officer.

Square lets customers make P2P payments via BLE

Square has added a feature to its Square Cash app that lets users leverage Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to make payments to anyone nearby, as well as an order ahead service for users of its Android and iOS apps.

The new Square Cash capability “lets customers discover people within close proximity and simply tap their name or photo to make a payment,” Square says.

“Customers can now choose to make themselves visible to anyone in the same space as them, or just to friends. The app can detect other Cash customers within 250 feet of the sender or recipient — making payments quick and convenient. The app update for iOS 8 also includes the ability to swipe a push notification to approve and reject a payment request.”

Meanwhile Square Order “lets you place an order in just a few taps from anywhere (like, as you’re rushing to your car), and pick it up whenever you’re ready,” the company explains. “With first-of-its-kind arrival prediction technology, Square Order can tell when you’re close and alert the coffee shop to set your order in motion.

“When you arrive, it’ll be fresh, hot, and ready on the counter. No need to pay or tap — that’s already been taken care of in the app. Just pick it up and be on your way.”
